Swimming pool covers can be a great investment, as they offer many benefits for your pool. But if you’ve just started shopping for a pool cover, you may need a little help determining which type of cover best suits your needs.

Types of Swimming Pool Covers

Pool covers, rather than being a “one size fits all” solution, are designed with different benefits in mind. Types of covers include:

  • Safety covers, which are made of a sturdy material and can prevent young children or pets from falling into the pool
  • Winter covers, which protect your pool from algae growth and debris while it is not in use for extended periods of time
  • Summer covers, which prevent evaporation, insulate the pool, and also prevent debris

Within these categories, there are also additional variations, like winter safety covers, which reduce drowning hazards and help protect your pool during the off season, and mesh security covers, which keep out leaves and other debris while allowing rainwater to enter the pool.

Choosing Your Pool Cover

Picking your pool cover from all the types of available swimming pool covers doesn’t need to be a complicated process. Simply ask yourself what you need and what your pool care priorities are.

If you have young children, for example, a safety cover is a priority no matter what season it is. If you want the clearest water when you reopen your pool, then a solid pool cover will be your best choice. But if you’re okay with doing a little more cleaning if it means having a longer-lasting pool cover, then looking at mesh pool covers might be a better option for you.
