Having a swimming pool is a lot of fun, but it comes with a lot of responsibility as well. To keep your pool safe and clean enough for swimming, pool chemicals are required. It is essential to have the correct pool chemicals for the size and type of pool you have, and it’s important to understand the purpose of these chemicals.

Keep It Clean: Making Sure You Have the Right Pool Chemicals

Pool chemicals typically fall under specific categories, including the following:

  • Sanitizers. These chemicals are used to disinfect your pool and keep it clean. Chlorine falls under this category, as do trichlor, sodium dichlor, and bromine. Some of these chemicals should never be used together, so it’s important to consult with a professional before adding sanitizers to your pool.
  • Oxidizers. These pool chemicals are also for cleaning, but more so for heavy-duty cleaning following extreme weather or in the event your pool is exposed to contaminants. Oxidizers may also be used after a pool party and other instances of heavy swimming pool usage.
  • Water Balancers. These substances are used to maintain a healthy balance of chemicals in your pool’s water. Water balancers are key in keeping your pool’s pH at the correct levels. Regular testing is necessary to determine the pH levels of your pool water.
  • Specialty Chemicals. These pool chemicals are not necessarily for regular use, but rather for specific issues with your pool water. Algaecides, phosphate removers, stain removers, and cleaners for vinyl and tile fall under this category of pool chemicals.
